Loved your column! Reminded me of when my wife and I would leave Berkeley for a weekend up the coast, and Mendocino was a tiny, quiet village where a motel cost $5 a night. Of course, that was in 1966...I guess it's changed since we drove *way* north to British Columbia in '67 and never went back.
