A Case Study of Republicans vs. Democrats on FEMA 2012

"The lesson here is simple. At a deep ideological level, Republicans believe that federal bureaucracies are inherently inept, so when Republicans occupy the White House they have no interest in making the federal bureaucracy work. And it doesn't. Democrats, by contrast, take government services seriously and appoint people whose job is to make sure the federal bureaucracy does work. And it does."

Emergency Operations Center 2010

"A location where uncomfortable officials meet in unfamiliar surroundings to play unaccustomed roles making unpopular decisions based on insufficient information in much too little time."

NERT drill 2010

Up early on a Saturday morning to walk over to the emergency services and neighborhood response teams' city-wide disaster drill. The rest of you, work on your kits. 67% chance of a 6.7 or greater quake in the SF Bay Area by 2032. Today is as likely as 20 years from now. If you can keep yourself from being a victim, our small number of emergency services workers can focus on those who really need help.

Here's me (standing to left of seated person in orange) working as Planning. That's Adam in the white vest doing a good job as our Neighborhood Team Leader. We were Team A, Hayes Valley, etc.

NERT! 2006

I just signed up to do Neighborhood Emergency Response Team training on the first 3 Saturdays in March in Noe Valley. Anyone want to join me?

I already have a hard hat - actually, I have two - from prior emergency training in other cities so I'm off to a good start.

Blog (noun) A weblog or similar brief journal usually containing links and commentary thereon. Term coined by Peter Merholz.

Visit Typepad or Blogger to start your own. (I began with hand coding, then switched to Blogger when it first became available, then to Movable Type when I wanted more control over my weblog and to have it hosted at a place of my choosing (Hurricane Electric). Since 06/2003 I've used Typepad, a hosted service built by the same folks who made Movable Type, which I love because I don't have to maintain the underlying system).
